Contrast stretches or compresses the gap between darks and lights around the midpoint. More contrast deepens shadows and brightens highlights for a punchier image; less contrast pulls everything toward gray for a muted, faded feel. Overdoing it crushes shadow and highlight detail, so nudge rather than shove.
