Cropping, and how to keep your subject
Every preset uses cover-crop: the image is scaled up until it fills the target box, then the overflow is trimmed equally from both sides. That's the right default — it never distorts and never leaves bars — but it does mean aggressive aspect changes eat your edges. Going from a landscape photo to a 1080×1920 Instagram story throws away most of the left and right of the frame.
When the subject isn't dead centre, crop deliberately first with Crop or Crop to aspect ratio, then bring the result here for the exact pixel dimensions. For a source that must not be cropped at all, Fit in a rectangle pads instead of trimming.
The sizes, and why they drift
These are the dimensions the platforms currently recommend, and they're deliberately generous — 1080 px wide for Instagram, 1280×720 for a YouTube thumbnail, 1200×630 for a Facebook or Open Graph card. Platforms re-compress and re-scale whatever you give them, so slightly oversized beats slightly undersized every time; undersized gets upscaled by their pipeline and looks soft.
Do expect this list to age. Header and cover dimensions in particular change every year or two, and each platform crops them differently across mobile and desktop — a banner that looks balanced in a browser can have its edges hidden in the app. Check anything mission-critical against the platform's own current guidance.
FAQ
Which format should I pick?
JPG for photographs — platforms re-encode to JPEG anyway, so you lose nothing by starting there and the upload is far smaller. PNG for graphics with flat colour, text or transparency.
Why did I get a ZIP?
More than four outputs are bundled, because thirty individual download rows are unusable. Four or fewer appear as separate rows.
Can I add my own size?
Not on this page — use Resize for arbitrary dimensions, or Thumbnail generator for a custom list of widths.
Does transparency survive?
With PNG or WebP, yes. JPG flattens it onto white.
Will my image get blurry?
Only if the source is smaller than the target, in which case it's being upscaled. Start from the largest original you have.
