Circle vs. oval
- Circle takes the shorter side of your image, centre-crops a square, and rounds it — the result is a perfect circle no matter the original aspect ratio. Ideal for avatars.
- Oval keeps the full width and height and inscribes an ellipse — good when you don't want to lose the edges of a wide or tall photo.
Why the output is PNG
The four corners outside the circle are made transparent, and only PNG (or WebP) can store that transparency. If you export the result as JPG, those corners fill with solid colour and the round effect is lost — so keep it as PNG wherever you place it.

My photo isn't square — will the circle still be round?
In Circle mode, yes: it centre-crops to a square first, so the circle is always perfectly round. Choose Oval if you'd rather keep the whole frame and accept an ellipse.
Can I round just the corners instead?
For a rounded-rectangle look rather than a full circle, use Round Corners.
