Monochrome vs. colour noise
- Monochrome nudges every pixel's brightness up or down by the same random amount — a clean, film-grain look that doesn't shift colours.
- Colour randomises each channel independently, giving a livelier, TV-static speckle.

How do I add grain to an image?

Will heavy noise on a gradient stop it banding?
Often yes — a little noise (dithering) hides the hard steps between shades. Start low, around 5–10%, for that use.
Is transparency kept?
Yes — only colour values get the noise; the alpha channel is left alone, so transparent areas stay transparent.
